Songwriter, vocalist, and guitar slinger, Phil Gammage is a Texas-born and raised artist who now resides in New York. His new single Speakeasy Blues, is a swashbuckling tale of lost America, drawing inspiration from Phil’s life as a musician, historian, and fiction writer. With it’s jazzy barrelhouse piano, Speakeasy Blues conjures an era of bathtub gin, flapper girls, railroad cars, and fast cons. This new single follows the release of Phil’s critically acclaimed album Redeemed from earlier in 2024.

Auteur-compositeur, chanteur et guitariste, Phil Gammage est un artiste né et élevé au Texas qui réside désormais à New York. Son nouveau single Speakeasy Blues est un récit fanfaron de l’Amérique perdue, s’inspirant de la vie de Phil en tant que musicien, historien et écrivain de fiction. Avec son piano jazzy barrelhouse, Speakeasy Blues évoque une époque de gin dans la baignoire, de filles à clapet et d’escroqueries rapides. Il fait suite à la sortie de l’album Redeemed de Phil, acclamé par la critique, au début de l’année 2024.

The talents of some of New York’s greatest musicians contribute to the recording. Roger Stoltz – drums; Johnny Young – keyboards; and David Fleming – harmonica join Phil (lead vocal, guitar).

About the music video Phil says:

“The narrative tells a story in the backroom saloon of a faded and weather-beaten seaside town. Enter the characters portrayed by Marina, Brana, and Johnny. Time has stood still for them with their days and nights having joined together to create one continuous never-ending round of song and drink. Johnny’s fingers at the piano coax sad haunting late-night ballads and the melancholy music of broken dreams for two women who have slipped through the cracks of life. They sway to the music, caught in the drift of memories of missed chances. Their lonely laughter is jagged and hollow like the town itself, washed up and worn down. Outside they can hear the distant sound of crashing waves murmuring through the bar’s cracked windows, a reminder of a forgotten life that once shimmered but has since slipped away.

There is no beginning and there is no end in their dimly lit backroom … it’s a world of forgotten promises and ghosts that never left.”
